Congregation at the Shekou Theatre Festival: November 2024
I held it and I knew where it would go.
In the autumn of 2023, I took two suitcases full of interactive spheres to Shanghai thanks to a British Council grant and the support of Shihui Weng of Tempest Projects. We did some small scale try outs of Congregation in Shanghai for the Performing Arts Fair and at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival. At the end of last year, I went back - to the Shekou Theatre Festival, Shenzhen - and this time with the whole set of 100 spheres having been freighted over in advance.
It is in my palm, in the palm of others, issuing curious, anxious, happy, hesitant... Sounds.
More than a dozen strangers, each received a sound ball, which seemed to hide a restless clockwork bird.
The task is, it's lost, to take it across the city and back to its lair.
Shekou is Shenzen’s seaside and working from the amazing SWAC arts centre we set up in sight of Hong Kong just across the bay. Over five days, working with an amazing local team, we presented eight performances of Congregation to a very positive and engaged audience judging from the wealth of images and mentions on the local social media!
It's the end.
The ball in the palm gave a more rapid and cheerful shout, as if it were about to break out of its shell.
People holding the ball came from all directions, to the high platform, to its nest.
